GPU technology conference 2009 (exhibitor)

The GPU Technology Conference is the most significant event in 2009 dedicated to application development on the GPU. Encompassing three simultaneous summits, this event will focus on the latest breakthroughs developers, engineers, and researchers are achieving through the use of the graphics processing unit (GPU) to solve the world’s most important computing challenges.

As always I put some photos from this travel to my blog. We were in San Jose, Marina Del Ray and San Diego. You can see not olny technical miracles from GPU Expo, but also beautifull animals from san Diego Zoo and many other interesting things.

Located 80 km northwest of Cuzco, Machu Picchu stands between the two mountain peaks, 2400 meter high above sea level. It is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a Historical Sanctuary of Peru.

Built in the middle of the 15th century, the city was an official residence for the Incan rulers. The giant walls, terraces and other constructions of Machu Picchu look as if they were naturally cut in the rocks. One of its most famous monuments is Intihuatana, used as a ritual stone, an astronomic clock and a calendar.

The population of Machu Picchu died less than 100 years after its construction. The Spanish invaders, who came to South America in the end of the 15th century, did not find the remote city. That’s what saved the site from destruction and allowed this amazing work of the Incan art to survive till nowadays.

A legend says that after the architect completed building Tatev, he took two stone chips and prayed God to have wings. His wish was granted and he flew away. The word “tatev” means “giving wings” in Armenian.

The monastery of Tatev, 316 kilometers away from Yerevan, was built in the 9th century, on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple. It was natural in those times; Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion and should fight with the paganism.

The most famous construction of Tatev is Gavazan, an 8 meter pending stone pillar. This unique work of Armenian art and engineering was meant to scare off the invaders, and always did it successfully. In 1931 an earthquake almost destroyed the monastery, but a lot of buildings, including the main church of Pogos and Petros, were reconstructed.

The first Western visitors were comparing Angkor Wat to the best examples of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. A Portuguese monk, who saw it in 1586, wrote that “its extraordinary construction is not possible to describe with a pen”.

Angkor Wat is a part of a huge Angkor complex, situated in Siem Reap province of Cambodia. It was built in the early 12th century by a Khmer king as his state temple and capital city. Initially a Hindu site, it was later converted to Buddhist use.

The temple’s design represents Mount Meru – in Hinduism the home of the gods. The towers symbolize its peak, and the walls and moats – the ocean and mountains around it. Its galleries and shrines are covered with the finest bas-reliefs, which became a part of the worldwide fame of this monument.
